#theChallenge Event Powered by Open Gym and WCE25, held at the epicenter of youth basketball, the American Sports Center in Anaheim, California, was just that…a task taken up by 76 teams from across Arizona, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Ventura County and the Inland Empire to get one last shot at making a statement in the 2012 rankings.  In the end, only seven squads were up to ultimate challenge.

  • The Rancho Cucamonga Dominators “Dominated” in the 8u and 9u younger divisions.
  • Baseline to Baseline, from Thousand Oaks/Ventura County, powered through the 10u division.
  • The newly named, City Stars (formerly Rising Stars and Tricity), rose above the 11u/12u competition.
  • Ranked starved NGA made a statement in the 13u division.
  • Beast Up bested Superior Athletes in the final game on #ChampionshipSunday.

For those teams that took “#theChallenge,” we salute you, for those that did not, you have a chance to step to #theChallenge early in 2013, at the Top Gun Challenge Event being held in San Diego, California or at the “Ballin Out” Tournament being held in Phoenix, Arizona on the weekend of January 5-6.

#theChallenge Undisputed Top Teams

  • 8u Dominators: The #4 Ranked Dominators were up to #theChallenge of not only besting the competition, but looking to play different 8u competition. The Dominators rolled through the 7 team 8u division by going 4-0 and defeating Open Gym in the final.  Congratulations!

  • 9u Dominators: The WCE25 ranked 9u Dominator squad, that includes members of same 8u team, defeated up and coming 323 Hoops 22-19 in the waning seconds of the championship game.  Co-MOPs Shadale Knight and Vincent James helped the Dominators control the up-speed tempo and ultimately close out the game by making a few key steals and free-throws in the final seconds of the game.  All that was missing from the game, was the great Dominator BBQ from a few weeks back.  Great job guys!  Congrats!

  • 10u Baseline to Baseline: Baseline to Baseline went 4-0 and defeated #13 ranked JR Hoops in the Championship game.  The Ventura based squad used their height advantage and the overwhelming support of their well traveled support team to go 4-0 over the weekend and pull an upset win over #13 ranked JR Hoops team in the Championship game.  Great job boys!  Congratulations and a soon to be welcome to the Top 25!

  • 11u City Stars: The LA based #7 Ranked City Stars breezed by Pool Play competition and met their new rivals to the South, the San Diego Rebels in the Championship game.  The highly anticipated 11u game was one the Rebels, who are on a mission to make a trek down to AAU Nationals in Cocoa Beach next Summer, were willing to make happen to get a better gauge of the team’s early season development.  The game did not disappoint although it almost looked like the City Stars were going to break away early on as they took a 10-0 lead with their high pressured press.  Although the Rebels made the game interesting, the City  Stars, led by MVP Paris Dawson and the ever feisty Maseo Refuerzo, were too much for the Rebels this early in the season. The most exciting portion of the game was the battle between point guards Alex Wade (Rebels) and Maseo Refuerzo (City Stars).  Both players were battling on just about every single play that at one point in time, we all thought Maseo was Manny Pacquiao, with better results.  Either way, both teams took #theChallenge and ultimately, it only makes them bigger threats against other teams in the Top 10.

  • 12u City Stars: The newly crowned C0 #1Ranked City Stars won Championship honors by defeating Top 15 teams, in SGV, JR Hoops and Riverside Matrix.  The fully loaded City Stars will now wait for the MLK match-up between them and our own West Coast Elite 2019 team at the ACES MLK event that will ultimately decide #1 ranking.  Congrats!

  • 13u NGA Stars: The NGA Stars simply want to be Recognized and Respected for their play and talent.  They called us out, took on #theChallenge and came away with Championship Honors.  In addition, they introduced us to 13u talented MOP, Payton Moore, who appears to have a great basketball future ahead of him.  They will need to wait a few more days to see how their championship dictates their ranking.  Congrats!

  • 14u Beast Up: Beast Up defeated friendly rival, Superior Athletes, in the final.  The game featured a talent heavy draw on both sides.  On the Beast Up  side, were Co-MOPS Nate Matthews and Randall Walker along with Harrison Butler.  On the Superior Athletes side, were lightning quick guard Kyle Small, 6’6 Claude Robinson along with Ethan Thompson and Devin Newton.  Way to Beast Up!
