Open Gym WCE25 #TheShowdown Recap

This past weekend, 50 teams from San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Los Angeles, Inland Empire and the Bay Area spread across 8 divisions participated in the Open Gym WCE25 #TheShowdown Tournament in Anaheim, California.  Every team came in hoping to end their almost end of summer run on a high note, but only 8 teams and 2014 HS All-American Stanley Johnson (playing for Open Gym) went home as Summer “TheShowdown Champs!

Remaining Upcoming Summer Events:

1) Phoenix is Rising August 16-18

2) Team Dojo and Dominators Ball Till You Fall at Cal State San Bernardino August 24-25

3) Pangos/Full Court Press Lead Guard Camp at Long Beach Cabrillo HS August 24

This past weekend’s “TheShowdown” Champions were as follows:

9u Division Champions: Yorba Linda Stampede 8u

MVP: Jason Cashachia(Yorba Linda Stampede 8u)

The 9u Division featured 4 teams (Open Gym, Yorba Linda Stampede 9u, NLBC, and #10 Ranked Yorba Linda Stampede 8u).   NLBC entered the Championship game at 3-0 versus a 1-2 Yorba Linda Stampede 8u who made it on point differential.  NLBC led for most of the game and was up 18-11 with 5 minutes to before Yorba Linda Stampede went on a 10-1 run to close out an exciting game that ended with Jaden Goodall’s game winning shot in the final seconds.  Point Guard Rylan Firouznam and MVP Jason Cassachia were phenomenal in the 2nd half comeback.  Kudos to NLBC for playing a tough game and for demonstrating great sportsmanship in defeat.    Congrats Yorba Linda Stampede 8u!

Point Guard: Rylan Firouznam (Yorba Linda Stampede 8u)

Game Winning Shot by: Jaden Goodall (Yorba Linda Stampede)

9u Division Runner-Up: Newport Lightning

10u Division Champions: LA Select

MVP: LA Select Parents/Fans (LA Select)

The 10u Division featured 3 ranked teams (#20 LA Select, #40 ESP Stars, #47 NLBC) along with Open Gym and Yorba Linda Stampede. The Championship Game featured #20 Ranked LA Select (3-0 in Pool Play) vs #40 Ranked ESP Stars (2-1 in Pool Play).  The ESP Stars were hoping to avenge their Saturday loss and had a 10 point lead early in the second half before LA Select made their championship run behind some of the loudest fans/parents ever heard at ASC.  These were the same fans that a month ago willed their team to victory over the CAVS at the San Diego Invitational.  LA Select pulled out the win by a score of 32-27 in an exciting game that proved both teams are worthy of a Top 25 ranking in the upcoming 2013-14 season.  Congrats to LA Select!

10u Runner-Up: ESP Stars

11u Division Champions: Bay Area Aces

MVP: Hamiel Tiongco (Bay Area Aces)

The 11u Division featured 4 teams from the Bay Area, San Diego and Orange County (Bay Area Aces, San Diego Gamepoint, Young Lancers and OC Blazers).  All 4 teams were looking to make into the Final 11u rankings that will be released in the next week, but only the Bay Area Aces proved themselves worthy.  With excellent guard play, the Bay Area Aces defeated a gritty San Diego Gamepoint team 33-30 in the Championship game.  All in all, a great way to end the summer by going up against teams encompassing the California coast.  Congrats Bay Area Aces!

11u Runner-Up: San Diego Gamepoint

12u Division Champions: Invitation Only

MVP: Dijaun Chumack (Invitation Only)

The 12u Division featured 8 teams seeking to make a name for themselves for the upcoming 2013-14 season (SoCal Wolverines, Open Gym, Invitation Only, San Diego Gamepoint, South Bay Basketball, Eastvale Warriors, Newport Lightning, and SoCal HPZ).  Although none of these teams finished in the WCE25 Top 50, the two finalist, Invitation Only and Eastvale Warriors, looked poised to make a run at earning a ranking if they can play like they did this past weekend.  Both teams played like the cream of the crop in pool play and it was no different in the Championship game.  Although Eastvale Warriors stayed closed enough throughout the game, Invitation Only was just too tough as they have been over the past 11 tournaments they have entered.  MVP Dijaun Chumack helped lead Invitation Only to a 46-39 victory.  Congrats Invitation Only!

12u Runner-Up: Eastvale Warriors

13u Division Champions: Surf City

MVP: Bryson Betti (Surf City)

The 13u Division featured 7 teams (Top 50 San Diego All Stars, Top 50 SD Next Generation, Campus Basketball, ELA Heat, South Bay Basketball, JSK and Eastvale Warriors) all looking to topple Top 5 Ranked Surf City.  Although both San Diego All Stars and SD Next Generation gave Surf City a game, Surf City was just too experienced and talented to go down in their own back yard.  The Nationally Ranked Surf City won the Championship Game 63-44 over San Diego All Stars in a game that was closely contested until the latter part of the second half. Congrats Surf City and good luck against the Best of the West at the Global CBA (Twitter @GlobalCBA) this coming season!

13u Runner-Up: San Diego All-Stars

14u Division Champions: West Coast Warriors

MVP: Jordan Williams(West Coast Warriors)

The 14u Division featured 9 teams (San Diego All Stars, East Bay United, Surf City, MOC Magic, La Mirada ACR, SD Next Generation, Open Gym, Havoc, Corona Snipers) and Top 50 West Coast Warriors. The West Coast Warriors cruised through pool play, but found a competitive a game in the Final versus Surf City.  Surf City trailed throughout the Championship game, but mounted a late second half comeback to bring them within 3 points with 7 seconds remaining.  With 7 seconds left, Surf City forced the West Coast Warriors into a 5 second call turnover and had one last chance to win it with 2 seconds remaining.  Unfortunately for them, they failed to convert on a try for a 3 point attempt that called a 2 point attempt and a foul to end the game at a score of 62-59 in favor of the West Coast Warriors.  Congrats West Coast Warriors!

JV Division Champions: Cali Rebels

Varsity Division Champions: Open Gym
