Top Gun Winter Challenge #SDChallenge Recap

The Top Gun WCE25 #SDChallenge featured 86 teams (23 WCE25 Ranked Teams) from San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Inland Empire, and Tucson battling it out in beautiful San Diego, CA in the first official big event of 2014.  Five out Six Gold Division winners were the highest ranked WCE25 teams in their grade division.  Only #16 Earl Watson Elite in the 13u division was able to best WCE25 rankings by winning their division over 2 higher ranked teams.

The Winter Challenge was WCE25’s second event in San Diego with Top Gun and it did not disappoint. Great competition, great weather, well organized and it lived up to the Top Gun motto “First Class. Long Term.”  We invite all teams to join us in the Spring for the San Diego Spring Open on March 29-30.

#SDChallenge Top 10

1. 10u Championship Game between #7 Cali Elite and #8 Dominators – The battle between both Inland Empire teams was intense.  Intense parents and fans.  Intense defensive pressure on both sides.  Intense battle for every loose ball, rebound, and water bottle on the court.  Intense benches on both sides.  Just about everything these kids did on the floor made you appreciate the innocence and purity of basketball.  Although Cali Elite ended up winning the game with a late game spurt, those who watched this game were the real winners.  Kudos to players on both sides and thanks for making WCE25 look good by showing how close a battle of #7 vs #8 can be.  #ballislife #AlwaysCompete

2. Team Dream 11u – Team Dream rocked their new 2014 Coach, but still not much changed.  The #5  team continues to compete and looked more balanced and battle tested after going through the GlobalCBA gauntlet late in December 2013.  Team Dream went 5-0, defeating 3 Top 31 WCE25 teams en-route to #SDChallenge Championship.  Congrats!

3. DJ McDonald (Cavs 2018) – Although the Cavs ended up losing to #11 Earl Watson Elite in the 14u Championship game, they did best 3 other higher ranked teams with the help of Point Guard DJ McDonald.  DJ is a competitive guard that can knock down the shot, shoot off the dribble, can run a team, and is strong enough to finish at the rim with great success.  DJ was simply the most impressive 2018 player in San Diego over the weekend.

4. Majok Deng (Tucson Team Prep 2019)-  The 6’4″ Deng is long and can play both like a big and a wing.  He dominated the paint in their upset win over #21SD Wildcats and led his team to a 2-1 record.  Although his team fell short against runner-up #12 JR Hoops, Majok had a big enough impact to make his team worthy of a Top 25 ranking.   The 6’4″ Deng has been invited to the August 2-3 Ballislife All-American National Camp being held in Anaheim, CA and hosted by Open Gym.

5. Jose Rocha (Open Gym 2019) – The Latino “Kevin Love” is a load.  The Ballislife All-American Camp Attendee handles the ball like a guard, has range and goes to the basket at will.  Jose helped lead his Open Gym squad to the Semis before falling to Earl Watson Elite in a game he helped keep close throughout.

6. Nick Bowden (JR Hoops 2020)  – When you hit four 3s versus #5 Riverside Matrix 2019 to help seal the game for your squad, you earned the right to be on WCE25’s Top 10 List.  The Ballislife All-American Camp Attendee was cruel in the Semi-Final game.  Nick has great range and has probably one of the prettier shots when the ball goes through the net.

7. Thomas Notarianni (San Diego Rebels 2020)  – Mr. Consistency always makes the dirty work look easy.  A very good rebounder and finisher near the basket, Thomas seems to always be at the right place to help make things easier for his team.  Although the #1 SD Rebels did not have a close contest all weekend, it was a pleasure watching Thomas play in his hometown.  #PhotoBombedAlexWade

8. Amani Harris (Earl Watson Elite 2019)  – Ran the floor and attacked the basket continuously throughout the weekend.  The slasher also used his soft touch to hit an array of midrange jumpers to help lead Earl Watson Elite 2019 to the #SDChallenge Championship.

9. Jonathan Juzang (Earl Watson Elite 2019) – The Ballislife All-American Camp Attendee was another reason Earl Watson Elite 2019 won the 13u #SDChallenge Championship.  Johnny converted a high percentage of his  midrange jumpers and used his length to dominate the boards for his squad.

10. Cavs 9u– They have only lost one game that we know of and for that reason we moved them to #2 behind AAU National Champion Washington Evolution. However, after going 4-0 in San Diego, beating out #4 YL Stampede and #8 Dominators (soon to be Top 5) and not seeing #1 Washington Evolution on the Seattle Rotary/Washington Youth Sports Schedule, we think they are worthy of the #1 Top 9u Ranking if they can win their MLK tourney in SoCal.  Cavs…its time to take back that #1 Ranking!
